Mounting a home directory remotely
The department's machines in the Caterpillar Lab and the departmental labs are configured to automatically mount the same home directory, which permanently resides on a computer named leibniz. If you are on campus or connected to a VPN, you can remotely mount this home directory on your own computer.
Windows XP (includes Stellyes Lab)
- From the Start menu, go to "My Network Places".
- On the left side of the window that pops up, click "Add a network place".
- Click "Next".
- Make sure "Choose another network location" is highlighted and click "Next'.
- At the location prompt, type "\\leibniz.lab.knet.edu\LOGIN", replacing LOGIN with your login name (in lowercase), and click "Next".
- Modify its nickname if you like, then click "Next".
- Click "Finish".
In the future, your leibniz home directory should be listed in your Network Places.
Mac OS X
- In the Finder, pull down the "Go" menu and open the "Connect to Server" dialog.
- In the "Server Address" field, type "smb://leibniz.lab.knet.edu/LOGIN/", replacing LOGIN with your login name (in lowercase).
- If you want the computer to save this setting, click the button with the plus sign.
- Click "Connect".
- Type your password when prompted.
If you save the setting, you will be able to just click on thata entry when connecting, rather than typing the whole thing in each time.
