The Computer Science major at Knox offers quite a bit of flexibility for students to choose their own path, based on their interests and their long-term post-college plans. We've put together three sample four-year plans for CS majors:
- For those with a general liberal arts focus. This plan leaves a lot of room to choose a wide variety of classes in other fields.
- For those who are thinking of grad school or industry (technical). This plan contains more than the minimum required CS electives and a lot of math, although there is still plenty of room to take at least one unrelated class each term.
- For those who are looking to enter business or industry (management). Programmers and IT professionals everywhere wish just one or two of their managers, marketers, and other coworkers better understood the processs of programming and the technical details of the systems being built; you can be that person. This plan gives a sound grounding in computer science, but also includes a number of relevant business and economics classes. It is tailored for the student who wants a career working with the IT staff.
All three sample plans will meet all the CS major requirements, and some of the college's general education requirements (namely, Quantitative Literacy (via Math175 and CS205, among others), Oral Presentation (via CS292), and 2/3 of the Writing Competency (via FP and CS292)). In addition, a complete educational plan will need to account for the following:
- One additional writing course
- A foreign language at the 103 level or above
- At least one course in each of the arts (ARTS), humanities (HUM), and history and social science (HSS)
- A minor (or second major)
- Understanding diversity
- Experiential learning
Note that these are suggested calendars. Not all courses may be available in the terms indicated, and some listed courses may conflict with other classes you'd like to take. You might not even be here for a term or two if you go abroad (as many Knox students do). You'll need to adjust your personal educational plan accordingly, but we can be fairly flexible.
